2026 World Braille Day

Written by: Kathryn Bray

We celebrate World Braille Day on January 4th because it is the birthday of Louis Braille,  the inventor of braille. It is a reminder of the importance of accessibility and independence for people who are blind or visually impaired.

We would also like to share a story of a heroic donor who gave the gift of sight to someone who is in desperate need. Meet Steve.

Steve Heroic Cornea Donor

His wife shared that Steve was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1948. In 1959, his family moved to the west side of Cleveland, at which time they met a neighbor, John, who was blind, and his guide dog was named, “Tanya.” Steve was infatuated with how much John could do because of the help of his guide dog. Every day after school, he would wait for John and Tanya to get off the bus. After high school, Steve worked as a rigger with the Teamsters and was involved in the union as chief steward and committeeman. In December 1982, Steve moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota and immediately became a chief steward.

This was when he first learned of what was then called the “International Guiding Eyes,” now known as “Guide Dogs of America.” Steve also served on the bylaw community, community service committee, human rights committee, safety committee and shop committee. Additionally, he was the conductor and financial secretary of Local Lodge 1833. In 1989, while at the district 143 bylaws convention, fundraising and the guide dog school were discussed. Steve approached two fellow leaders, telling them that he knew of a great way to raise funds by having a motorcycle ride and asked if they would be interested in helping. They immediately said yes, and that was the beginning of “Hawgs for Dogs” annual benefit ride. Since then, “Hawgs for Dogs” has been a very big part of Steve’s life and everyone else in it, including his lovely and supportive wife, Grace.
