Epic and Donate Life America collaborated in 2025 to offer patients a seamless way to register to be an organ, eye and tissue donor directly through the MyChart patient portal.
How does it work? Patients can register their decision to be organ, eye and tissue donors in MyChart from their desktop or phone. Only adults over the age of 18-years-old in the United States can register using this medium. It does not matter what your medical history is, the gift is saying ‘YES.’
When you make the decision to register as a heroic donor in your MyChart account, it will remain private and will not be visible to your healthcare team. Only organ procurement organizations (OPOs) like Nevada Donor Network will have access to this information through the National Donate Life Registry, and it will only be accessed when needed to honor the patient’s decision at the time of their passing.
Why does this matter? Over 110,000 people in the United States are desperately waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant. There is no transplantation without the generosity of heroic organ, eye and tissue donors and their courageous family.
By registering through MyChart, you ensure that your donor registration is documented in the National Donate Life Registry. This allows your decision to be honored no matter where you live. Being a registered donor is a first-person authorization and is legally binding. This means that your decision cannot be overturned against your wishes.
According to Donate Life America, in 2023, about 50% of adults in the United States registered as organ, eye and tissue donors when given the opportunity at a local DMV office. Registering through MyChart provides 180 million people with another trusted pathway to register their lifesaving and healing decision to be a hero. They also found out in a survey that online patient portals are highly trusted pathways for donor registration.
