A Nurse’s Journey to Transplant- Melanie’s Story

Written by: Kelley McClellan

Melanie is a critical care registered nurse at Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center. She has been dedicated to her career with their team for 20 years, working on several different floors of the hospital. Despite undergoing dialysis and struggling with kidney failure for a while, Melanie continued to care deeply for her patients. She received a lifesaving kidney transplant at the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada’s (UMC) Center for Transplantation in 2024. To celebrate Melanie’s one year transplant anniversary, she decided to gather her coworkers and loved ones to join Nevada Donor Network at Hope Glows 2025. She built a team named, “Mel’s Miracle Marchers,” encouraging her Southern Hills Hospital team members to join through promotion in their employee newsletter, word of mouth and more. Mel’s Miracle Marchers won the ‘Largest Team’ Award at this year’s Hope Glows (50 team members registered)! They also won the ‘Top Fundraising Team for a Corporate Group’ Award, raising an incredible $2,855 in support of our mission to save and heal lives through organ, eye and tissue donation. We are proud to have healthcare professionals at the heart of the organ, eye and tissue donation process in Nevada. Our team greatly values the relationships we have with behavioral health hospitals, home health agencies, hospices, hospitals, long term care facilities and post-acute care centers. Our team makes every effort to not only connect and work with leadership teams, but also with their frontline staff as well. The reasoning behind connecting with all levels of these teams is to develop collaborative and supportive partnerships that make our lifesaving and healing mission possible. We are beyond grateful to all healthcare professionals who go above and beyond their duties to support.
